Marneuli is a town of around 20,000 inhabitants serving as the administrative centre of the homonymous municipality in the Kvemo Kartli region of south-eastern Georgia, some 35 kilometres south of Tbilisi. It lies in a fertile alluvial plain on the Algeti River, between the lower reaches of the Khrami and Debeda, a position that already in antiquity made it a strategic transport and trade hub. Marneuli is a strikingly multi-ethnic town: more than two thirds of its inhabitants are ethnic Azerbaijanis, alongside Georgians, Armenians, Kurds and Greeks. The surrounding district is one of Georgia's main vegetable suppliers, with Marneuli tomatoes, cucumbers, watermelons and early potatoes famous across the Caucasus. In recent years the town has shifted from a purely rural-agricultural character to a regional trading centre, with wholesale markets, processing plants and logistics functions serving Tbilisi. The annual Novruz spring festival reflects its strong Azerbaijani culture, complemented by Georgian monastery ruins, the access route towards David Gareja and prehistoric burial mounds in the wider area.
