Dmanisi (Georgia)

Weather…

Dmanisi is a monumental destination for anyone interested in human history, located in the Kvemo Kartli region of southeastern Georgia. It became world-famous following the groundbreaking discovery of 1.8-million-year-old hominin skulls, named Homo georgicus. These extraordinary findings proved that early human ancestors migrated out of Africa thousands of years earlier than previously thought, fundamentally changing our understanding of human evolution. Today, the Dmanisi Museum-Reserve features an incredible journey back to the dawn of humanity. Beyond its prehistoric significance, Dmanisi is a deeply layered historical site. Visitors can explore the extensive ruins of a prosperous medieval city that was once a major commercial hub on the ancient Silk Road. The site features the beautifully preserved 6th-century Dmanisi Sioni Cathedral, ancient defensive walls, and remains of fortresses and bathhouses. The open-air museum provides excellent informational displays, and you can often see active archaeological excavations taking place. Dmanisi is easily reachable as a day trip from the capital, Tbilisi. The best time to visit is during the mild seasons of spring and autumn, providing pleasant weather for walking among the ancient ruins and viewing the excavation pits. The surrounding volcanic landscapes and river valleys create a striking backdrop, making it a first-rate excursion blending deep history, science, and beautiful nature.
