Gori, home to about 50,000 people, is a major town in the central Georgian region of Shida Kartli, sitting at the confluence of the Kura and Liakhvi rivers some 80 kilometres west of Tbilisi. Its name means hill and refers to the prominent rocky outcrop crowned by the 7th-century Goristsikhe fortress. Gori is best known internationally as the birthplace of Joseph Stalin; the museum dedicated to the Soviet leader, complete with his birth house and armoured private train, remains one of the most controversial tourist attractions in the country. In August 2008, during the Russo-Georgian War, the town suffered serious damage and many neighbourhoods had to be rebuilt; its outskirts today hold large modern housing estates for displaced people from South Ossetia. Nearby attractions include the cave city of Uplistsikhe, inhabited since the Bronze Age, and the 11th-century Ateni Sioni church with its renowned frescoes. Economically, Gori is a hub for fruit processing, especially the famed apples and pears of the Shida Kartli valley.
