Khashuri is a town of about 25,000 inhabitants in the Shida Kartli region of central Georgia and one of the country's most important transport hubs. Lying on the Suramula River, it marks the point where the main road and railway from Tbilisi to the west split: one branch crosses the Surami Pass towards Borjomi and the Turkish border, while the other heads through Imereti to the Black Sea. The town's modern significance dates from the construction of the Transcaucasian Railway in 1872, which brought large repair workshops and locomotive depots. Today, food processing, engineering, glass production and the handling of orchard produce from the valley dominate the economy. Notable sights include the Stalinist-style town centre with its neoclassical railway station, Saint George's Cathedral and, nearby, the 12th-century medieval Surami Castle, immortalised in Georgian folklore through the legend of the boy walled into its foundations. The surrounding valley is framed by extensive apple and pear orchards.
