Regarded as the wine capital of the Bas-Rhin department, Barr is a quintessential yet pleasantly uncrowded stop along the famous Alsace Wine Route. Positioned at the forested foothills of the Vosges Mountains, the town enchants visitors with its exceptionally well-preserved historical center. The cobbled market square is dominated by the striking 17th-century Town Hall, a brilliant example of Renaissance architecture with its steep gabled roofs and ornate facade. Branching off the square are narrow, winding streets lined with brightly painted half-timbered houses draped in seasonal flowers, many hiding cozy taverns serving traditional Alsatian comfort food. Visitors can step back in time at the Folie Marco museum, housed in an elegant 18th-century patrician home that showcases the bourgeois lifestyle and furnishings of past centuries. Viticulturally, the town is most famous for the Grand Cru Kirchberg de Barr vineyard, whose limestone and clay soils produce highly acclaimed Gewürztraminer and Riesling wines. Trails lead directly from the town center up into the terraced vineyards, providing hikers with sweeping views across the Rhine plain all the way to the Black Forest. Barr successfully retains an authentic, lived-in atmosphere in the wine country.
