Thionville is located in the Moselle department of the Grand Est region, just a few miles from the borders of Luxembourg and Germany. The city features a complex history, serving for centuries as a strategic stronghold between France and the Holy Roman Empire. During the Middle Ages, it was a residence for the Counts of Luxembourg before being annexed by France in the 17th century. The city's primary landmark is the 14th-century Belfry (Beffroi), which symbolized its municipal autonomy. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Thionville evolved into a major center for heavy industry, specifically iron and steel production, which left a lasting mark on its urban landscape. Today, the city has successfully transitioned into a modern service hub, benefiting significantly from its proximity to Luxembourg and cross-border trade. Notable architectural sites include the Tour aux Puces, a medieval defensive tower that now houses an archaeological museum.
