Montbéliard, located in eastern France near the Swiss border, has a history that is distinct from much of the rest of the country. For over 400 years, until the French Revolution, it was a principality belonging to the German House of Württemberg. This long-standing connection fostered a strong Protestant tradition and a unique architectural style influenced by German Renaissance trends. The skyline is dominated by the Castle of the Dukes of Württemberg, a formidable fortress that now houses the city's museum of history and natural sciences. In the 1800s, Montbéliard became a cornerstone of the Industrial Revolution, primarily due to the rise of the Peugeot company, which started as a family-run hardware business before evolving into an automotive giant. The nearby Sochaux plant remains one of the largest vehicle manufacturing sites in Europe. The city is also famous for its culinary specialty, the Montbéliard sausage, a traditional smoked pork product with protected geographical status (PGI). Every December, the city hosts the 'Lumières de Noël' (Christmas Lights), one of France’s most popular and magical Christmas markets. With its beautiful Près-la-Rose park and a focus on scientific culture (Le Pavillon des Sciences), Montbéliard is a dynamic hub blending princely history with industrial innovation.
