Illkirch-Graffenstaden is a key municipality of the Strasbourg Eurometropole, located just south of the Alsatian capital. The city's identity is forged from two distinct histories: Illkirch, named for its church on the Ill river, and Graffenstaden, which became an industrial powerhouse in the 19th century. The Graffenstaden mechanical works were legendary for their production of locomotives and heavy machinery, driving the local economy for generations. In recent decades, the city has successfully pivoted toward the knowledge economy. It is home to the Strasbourg Innovation Park, a major site for biotechnology, pharmaceutical research, and IT innovation. Notably, it serves as the global headquarters for the International Space University (ISU), cementing its status as a center for higher education. Despite its industrial and scientific focus, the city maintains a high quality of life with extensive green spaces, such as the Friedenspark, and scenic waterfronts along the Ill river and the Rhine-Rhone canal. Its seamless connection to the Strasbourg tramway ensures it remains a vital and accessible part of the metropolitan area.
