Strasbourg, the capital of the Grand Est region and the formal seat of the European Parliament, stands as a powerful symbol of Franco-German reconciliation and European integration. Located on the Ill and Rhine rivers directly on the border with Germany, the city possesses a 2,000-year history defined by its dual cultural influences. Its historical center, the "Grande Île," was the first entire city center in France to be designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1988. The city's primary landmark is the Strasbourg Cathedral, which remained the world's tallest building for over two centuries until 1874. The cityscape is characterized by a unique blend of medieval timber-framed houses in the "Petite France" district and the monumental architecture of the German-built Neustadt. As a major diplomatic hub, Strasbourg hosts the Council of Europe and the European Court of Human Rights alongside the EU Parliament. Furthermore, the city is famous for its Christkindelsmärik, a Christmas market established in 1570, making it one of the oldest in Europe. Strasbourg, seat of the European Parliament, hosted key sessions in 2024-2025 amid French political instability. The cathedral celebrated its millennium in 2025.
