Nancy, the former capital of the Duchy of Lorraine in eastern France, is globally renowned for its exceptional 18th-century architectural heritage. The heart of the city is the Place Stanislas, which, along with the adjacent Place de la Carrière and Place d'Alliance, has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1983. Named after Stanisław Leszczyński, the exiled King of Poland and last Duke of Lorraine, the square is considered one of the most beautiful in Europe, famous for its gilded iron gates and fountains. Around the turn of the 20th century, Nancy emerged as a leading center of the Art Nouveau movement in France, spearheaded by the École de Nancy and artists such as Émile Gallé. This era endowed the city with magnificent villas and innovative glassworks, preserved today in specialized museums. Today, Nancy is a thriving university city and a significant hub for research, healthcare, and administrative services in the Grand Est region. The city's unique character stems from the harmonious blend of classical elegance and the fluid, nature-inspired forms of Art Nouveau architecture.
