Nancy, the historic former capital of the Duchy of Lorraine in eastern France, is globally renowned for its magnificent architectural ensemble dating from the Age of Enlightenment. The centerpiece of the city is the Place Stanislas, which, along with the Place de la Carrière and Place d'Alliance, has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1983 and is widely regarded as one of Europe's most beautiful urban squares. The square was commissioned in the 18th century by Stanislaus I Leszczynski, the deposed King of Poland and father-in-law to Louis XV, to link the medieval old town with the new city. Nancy was also a pioneering center of the Art Nouveau movement around 1900, famously known as the Ecole de Nancy. Renowned artists like Emile Galle and Louis Majorelle shaped this style, and their masterpieces are showcased in the Musee de l'Ecole de Nancy. The historic district, Vieille Ville, retains its medieval allure, centered around the Palace of the Dukes of Lorraine. Today, Nancy is a prestigious university city with a strong focus on culture, research, and innovation, located within the rolling hills of the Lorraine region and along the banks of the Meurthe River.
