Metz, located at the confluence of the Moselle and Seille rivers in northeastern France, is home to a rich history spanning over 3,000 years. Once the capital of the Austrasian kingdom and a pivotal center for the Carolingian dynasty, the city preserves a vast cultural heritage. The Saint-Étienne Cathedral, often called God's Lantern, features one of the world's largest expanses of stained glass, including masterpieces by Marc Chagall. The city's architecture is uniquely characterized by the use of golden-hued Jaumont limestone, which gives the buildings a distinctive, warm radiance. In stark contrast to the dense, medieval old town is the Quartier Impérial, built in an eclectic style during the German administration at the end of the 19th century. Since 2010, the Centre Pompidou-Metz, a triumph of modern museum design with its iconic, sweeping white roof, has symbolized the city's cultural revitalization. As a key center for education and research in the heart of Europe, Metz today balances its historic identity as a formidable fortified city with a modern, progressive focus on ecological urbanism and digital innovation.
