Mulhouse is located in the Alsace region near the triple border of France, Germany, and Switzerland and is famous for its rich industrial heritage. The city was once a major hub for the textile and mechanical industries, earning it the nickname the French Manchester during the 19th century. Until 1798, Mulhouse was an independent city-republic before voluntarily joining the French Republic. The heart of the old town is the Place de la Réunion, featuring the colorful Renaissance-style Town Hall and the imposing Saint-Étienne Church. Today, Mulhouse is home to some of the world's most significant technical museums, including the Cité de l'Automobile with the famous Schlumpf collection and the Cité du Train. These collections make the city a premier destination for lovers of industrial culture and engineering. Despite its heavy industrial past, Mulhouse provides numerous parks and green spaces, such as its renowned Zoological and Botanical Garden. Its strategic location on the Rhine-Rhône Canal has shaped its commercial importance and economic development for centuries.
