Erstein is located in the heart of the Alsatian plain, approximately 20 kilometers south of Strasbourg. The city has a deep-rooted industrial identity, primarily shaped by its sugar refinery founded in 1893, which continues to be one of the region's most significant production sites. Geographically, Erstein benefits from its proximity to the Rhine and the Rhône-Rhine Canal, which has fostered economic development for centuries. Architecturally, the town provides a blend of traditional Alsatian timber-framed houses and grand 18th-century buildings, including the baroque town hall. Culturally, Erstein is renowned for the Musée Würth, which showcases modern and contemporary art in an impressive modern building, attracting visitors from across the border region. The surrounding countryside is characterized by fertile farmland where sugar beets and corn are the primary crops. The city serves as an essential administrative and service hub for the central Alsace region, offering a high quality of life with extensive green spaces and modern infrastructure, including a well-connected train station on the Strasbourg-Mulhouse line.
