Usutu Forest (Eswatini)

Weather…

The Usutu Forest in western Eswatini is one of the largest man-made forests in the world, covering an area of approximately 65,000 hectares. The project was initiated in the late 1940s by the Commonwealth Development Corporation to broaden the economic base of the then-Swaziland. The forest consists primarily of fast-growing pine species such as Pinus patula and eucalyptus trees, utilized for the paper and pulp industry. Geographically, it is located on the Highveld plateau near the town of Bhunya, which was once home to the historic Usutu pulp mill. The management of this forest has significantly shaped local infrastructure and employment for decades. Despite its industrial purpose, the forest provides habitat for various wildlife species and helps regulate the region's water cycle. In recent years, there has been an increased focus on sustainable forestry practices to preserve soil quality and biodiversity for the long term.
