Manzini

Manzini, formerly known as Bremersdorp, is with around 110,000 inhabitants the largest city in Eswatini and is considered the animated economic powerhouse of the kingdom. The city lies in the fertile Middleveld at an altitude of about 700 meters and grew out of a small trading post in the late 1880s, where European traders settled under the leadership of the German merchant Albert Bremer. Until 1902, Manzini even served as the capital of what was then Swaziland, before the British colonial administration relocated the seat of government to Mbabane. Today, Manzini hosts the largest open-air market in the country, where hundreds of vendors offer fresh produce, traditional Sangoma medicinal herbs, sisal baskets and intricately carved wooden figurines. The city is also a significant religious center, home to the Roman Catholic Our Lady of Assumption Cathedral and several major educational institutions such as Salesian Secondary School. Economically, Manzini benefits greatly from its proximity to the Matsapha Industrial Area, which hosts numerous textile factories, food processors and logistics hubs, providing tens of thousands of jobs.
