Matsapha is Eswatini's economic powerhouse, located just west of Manzini in the fertile Middleveld. The area, planned specifically as an industrial zone in the 1960s, today hosts more than 250 companies in textiles, food processing, chemicals, logistics and printing. Around 30,000 people work here in total, making Matsapha the largest employer hub in the kingdom. Well-known firms such as Cadbury, Coca-Cola Eswatini, Tex Ray and several Taiwanese textile manufacturers have set up operations here. The strategic location between Manzini, Mbabane and the railway connection to Maputo makes Matsapha an indispensable node in the Eswatini economy. The town also hosts Matsapha International Airport (now the King Mswati III secondary airport), the Eswatini Royal Police Academy and several educational institutions. The climate is temperate subtropical, with warm summers and mild winters. Rapid industrial development has, however, also brought challenges: housing shortages, traffic congestion and pollution are visible consequences. Even so, Matsapha is a fascinating symbol of Eswatini's economic modernization and shows how a small African country can successfully integrate into regional value chains.
