Usutu is closely tied to the Usutu Forests, one of the largest man-made forests in the world, stretching across the western and central Manzini and Hhohho districts. In the 1950s the South African Sappi company, with British and Swedish participation, launched a vast afforestation project that planted around 70,000 hectares of pine, eucalyptus and acacia. These plantations supplied raw material to the Sappi Usutu Pulp Mill at Bhunya, for decades Africa's largest pulp mill. Today the forests are managed by Montigny Investments and supply a growing timber and bioenergy industry. The Usutu settlement itself is small, with workers' residential areas, schools and clinics, but it is deeply intertwined with the region's economic identity. The climate is cool: the Highveld has spring and autumn temperatures almost year-round, with cold winters and occasional frost. The scenic forests offer hiking and mountain-biking trails and even some of Eswatini's few cool waterfalls. Ecologically too the forests are important: they act as a watershed for Eswatini's most important rivers and shelter numerous bird species, including the rare Knysna turaco. Usutu represents the forestry identity of the Highveld.
