Granvalley is a scenic valley in the Manzini District whose fertile soils and mild middle Highveld climate provide well-suited conditions for citrus cultivation. The region was opened up in the early 20th century by British and Dutch settlers as a plantation area, primarily for oranges, mandarins, lemons and grapefruits. Today many of these orchards are continued by Eswatini cooperatives and family farms that export their produce both to the local market and to neighboring countries. Avocados, peaches and apricots are also playing an increasing role, especially in the higher parts of the valley. The climate is temperate, with warm summers and cool winters; the mountains surrounding the valley shelter it from extreme weather. Granvalley is also scenically striking: green hills, clear streams, small waterfalls and pine groves give it an almost Mediterranean feel. Tourism focuses on hiking trails, small lodges and orchard tours where visitors can pick their own fruit. Socio-culturally the region is also notable: annual Fruit Festivals celebrate the diversity of local horticulture and bring together artists, musicians and chefs from across the country. Granvalley embodies the agricultural and touristic versatility of Eswatini.
