Old Nhlambanyatsi Sawmill (Eswatini)

Weather…

The Old Nhlambanyatsi Sawmill is inextricably linked to the creation of the Usutu Forest, one of the world's largest man-made forests. Following World War II, the Commonwealth Development Corporation (CDC) launched this massive forestry project to broaden the economic base of what was then Swaziland. Nhlambanyatsi was established as a planned 'company town' for the sawmill workers and forestry management. The mill processed vast quantities of pine and eucalyptus timber for both regional and international markets. For decades, the industrial facility served as the engine of the local economy and shaped the social fabric of the community. Although modern timber processing is now concentrated in technologically advanced centers like Bhunya, the old mill remains a monument to the visionary post-war forestry projects. It documents the transformation of a formerly barren hillside into a green industrial powerhouse.
