Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary is Eswatini's pioneer conservation area, located in the scenic Ezulwini Valley between Mbabane and Manzini. It was established in 1961 by Ted Reilly on what was once a private farm, signaling the start of the modern conservation movement in the kingdom. The sanctuary covers 4,560 hectares and features a diverse landscape of open grasslands and forested hills, dominated by the iconic peak known as 'Execution Rock'. Because Mlilwane lacks large predators like lions, it is a popular destination for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback safaris among zebras, wildebeests, and blesboks. The reserve also supports a wide variety of waterfowl at its numerous dams and wetland areas. Culturally, Mlilwane is deeply intertwined with Eswatini's heritage and serves as a flagship for sustainable tourism and environmental education. The name 'Mlilwane' means 'little fire', referring to the wildfires that historically occurred on the slopes of the surrounding hills.

Best season
The dry season from May to October is handy for visiting Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary, as zebras and antelopes are easily spotted. During the rainy season from November to April, vegetation is denser, obstructing views, but many young animals can be seen.
Best time of day
Early morning and late afternoon are the most active times for wildlife viewing, when animals graze on the open plains. The midday heat drives most hoofed animals into the shade, making them harder to spot then.
Etiquette
Visitors are free to walk around the sanctuary but should maintain a respectful distance from animals, especially zebras and antelopes. Feeding the animals is prohibited, and loud noises should be avoided to keep the natural environment undisturbed.
What to bring
Comfortable walking shoes and light clothing are recommended due to the many hiking trails and warm temperatures. Binoculars are useful for spotting animals from a distance without disturbing them.
Getting there
Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Ezulwini Valley, only about 30 kilometers from Manzini, and is easily accessible via paved roads. The entrance is along the main MR3 road, and there is ample parking for visitors.
What to expect
Since the animals in the sanctuary are accustomed to humans, they can often be seen from close range, but sudden movements may startle them. Take your time and sit quietly in a spot - patience is rewarded with unforgettable encounters.
