Catamayo is located in a fertile valley within the Loja Province and is primarily known as the site of the Ciudad de Catamayo regional airport. The city sits at an elevation of approximately 1,250 meters and enjoys a warm, dry climate that contrasts sharply with the cooler weather of the provincial capital, Loja. Agriculture is the backbone of the local economy, with sugarcane cultivation and the production of spirits (aguardiente) playing a central role. Every year in August, Catamayo becomes a vital transit point for thousands of pilgrims accompanying the Virgin of El Cisne on her journey to Loja. The city features a well-developed tourism infrastructure, featuring numerous recreational centers and thermal baths that attract visitors from across the region. Historically, the valley was inhabited as far back as pre-Columbian times, evidenced by archaeological finds in the surrounding area. Its convenient location at the junction of major highways makes Catamayo an important commercial hub in southern Ecuador. In recent decades, the city has evolved into a dynamic urban center with a growing industrial presence.
