La Troncal is a major city in the Cañar Province, strategically located at the transition zone between the Andean foothills and the coastal plains of Ecuador. Despite being part of a highland province, it experiences a tropical climate, which makes it a vital agricultural center. La Troncal is nationally famous for its sugar industry, housing vast sugarcane plantations and large processing mills such as Ecudos. The city originally grew as a settlement along the main highway connecting Guayaquil and Cuenca and was officially elevated to canton status on September 22, 1983. In addition to sugarcane, the fertile region produces bananas and cocoa for export. Tourism is becoming increasingly important, driven by nearby thermal baths and the proximity to the Manglares Churute Ecological Reserve. La Troncal serves as a dynamic commercial hub and a bridge between the diverse geographical zones of the country.
