Yaguachi, officially designated as San Jacinto de Yaguachi, is located in the coastal lowlands of Guayas Province, approximately 30 kilometers northeast of Guayaquil. The town holds profound historical significance in the context of Ecuador's independence, as it was the site of the pivotal Battle of Yaguachi on August 19, 1821, where General Antonio José de Sucre's forces defeated the Spanish royalists. Geographically, it sits in a highly fertile alluvial plain on the banks of the Yaguachi River, at a low elevation of only 15 meters above sea level. Its primary landmark is the San Jacinto Cathedral, the focal point of one of the most important religious pilgrimages in Ecuador, occurring annually every August. The city's development was historically linked to the trans-Ecuadorian railway system, established in 1873, which connected the coastal regions to the Andean highlands. Today, Yaguachi remains a vital agricultural hub, with its economy centered on the large-scale production of rice, sugarcane, and bananas, as well as cattle ranching. The flat topography and tropical monsoon climate provide well-suited conditions for intensive farming, while its proximity to Guayaquil ensures easy access to national and international markets.
