Piñas is located in the southern highlands of the El Oro Province and is widely celebrated as the "Orchid of the Andes." The city sits at an elevation of approximately 1,100 meters and enjoys a mild, subtropical climate, well-suited for the orchid cultivation that gives it its nickname, as well as for growing coffee and cocoa. Founded in 1895, Piñas has since evolved into the administrative and commercial hub of the region. Beyond agriculture, the city is famous for its high-quality honey production and beekeeping industries. Every November, significant festivities take place to mark the cantonization, characterized by colorful parades and beauty pageants. In the surrounding area, numerous nature trails and waterfalls, such as the San Roque Waterfall, attract hikers and nature lovers. Piñas is regarded as one of the cleanest and most well-organized cities in southern Ecuador. The local gastronomy features specialties like "Molloco" (a dish made from green plantains), which is typical of the region's rural heritage. The city's hilly topography provides impressive views of the surrounding montane cloud forests from many vantage points.
