Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Dew (Ecuador)

Weather…

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Dew (Santuario de Nuestra Señora del Rocío) is a dramatic architectural marvel located in Biblián, Cañar Province. This neo-Gothic church is uniquely built directly into the steep rocky face of Zhalao Hill, merging sacred architecture with the natural landscape. Construction began in 1893 following a severe drought; the local community promised to build a chapel to the Virgin Mary in exchange for rain, and after the first showers arrived, they fulfilled their vow. Over the following decades, the small chapel evolved into a monumental sanctuary featuring soaring spires, pointed arches, and a facade constructed from locally quarried stone. To reach the main sanctuary, visitors must climb a series of steep staircases that offer increasingly spectacular views of the Biblián valley and the surrounding Andean peaks. The interior design is solemn and simple, with sections of the natural rock formation exposed within the sanctuary's walls. Today, it stands as one of the most important pilgrimage sites in southern Ecuador, especially during the annual festivals in September. The sanctuary is celebrated not only for its religious significance but also for its remarkable engineering and aesthetic integration with the mountain.
