Manglares Churute Ecological Reserve (Ecuador)

Weather…

The Manglares Churute Ecological Reserve is located in the Guayas province on the eastern shores of the Gulf of Guayaquil, covering approximately 49,389 hectares. Established in 1979, it is one of Ecuador's most significant protected areas, safeguarding one of the largest remaining mangrove ecosystems on the Pacific coast. The reserve features a unique blend of saltwater estuaries, salt marshes, and tropical dry forests, along with high-altitude cloud forests in the Churute hills. Its mangroves, consisting of five different species, serve as vital breeding grounds for numerous fish and crustacean species. Wildlife highlights include red howler monkeys, giant anteaters, and over 300 species of birds, including the elusive Horned Screamer. As a designated Ramsar site of international importance, Manglares Churute is essential for coastal stabilization and provides a critical habitat for both terrestrial and aquatic biodiversity.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The dry season from June to November is best, as water levels are low and waterfowl congregate. During the rainy season, many areas are flooded.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning and late afternoon are handy for birding when birds are most active. At midday, most species rest in the shade of mangroves.
📜
Etiquette
Stay on boardwalks and piers to avoid damaging the sensitive mangrove roots. Do not feed the birds and avoid loud noises.
🎒
What to bring
Binoculars are essential for close-up viewing of waterfowl. Sunscreen, insect repellent, and sturdy waterproof footwear are highly recommended.
🧭
Getting there
The reserve lies about 45 km southeast of Guayaquil along the coast. It is reachable by car via the E25 road, though the last kilometres are unpaved.
🦌
What to expect
Bird life is rich, but animals can be shy. Find a quiet spot and wait for the birds to come back into view.
