Lovran is the lesser-known spot of the Opatija Riviera. While neighboring Opatija is known for its grandeur, Lovran has meticulously preserved its intimate, aristocratic charm. The town derives its name from the laurel plant (Croatian 'lovor'), which grows abundantly here and infuses the sea air with a distinct fragrance. During the Austro-Hungarian era, Lovran was an exclusive health resort for the nobility, evidenced today by the magnificent villas tucked away in seaside gardens. The medieval core, with its narrow passages and prominent town tower, provides a delightful contrast to the sophisticated Art Nouveau architecture. A major highlight is the Lungomare, a scenic 12-kilometer coastal path connecting Lovran to Opatija and Volosko, great for long, contemplative walks. Culinary enthusiasts know Lovran for its 'maruni', a superior variety of chestnuts so prized that a dedicated festival, the Marunada, is held every October. The fusion of the maritime climate with the fresh breezes from the Učka mountain makes Lovran a premier year-round destination.
