Krk is the cultural and historical heart of the island of the same name, boasting over 2,000 years of urban history. The Romans appreciated its strategic location and called it Curicum. The city walls, surrounding parts of the old town, are partially ancient and were expanded in the Middle Ages with the mighty Frankopan Castle, which now hosts cultural events. An architectural jewel is the Krk Cathedral, a complex from various periods built on the site of Roman thermal baths. The city is particularly proud of its Glagolitic heritage; the famous Baška Tablet, a founding document of the Croatian language, was found in the vicinity. The winding streets of the old town house small galleries, wine bars, and restaurants offering local specialties like Šurlice pasta. Krk combines ancient grandeur with bustling Mediterranean hospitality.
