Veprinac is a historical gem on the slopes of the Učka mountain range. The settlement was inhabited as early as prehistoric times and today preserves its medieval charm. Access to the old town is through a well-preserved city gate, behind which narrow stone streets and stairs wind. At the highest point sits the Church of Saint Mark, from whose forecourt you can overlook the entire Kvarner Basin including the islands of Krk and Cres. Particularly worth seeing is the ethno-collection in the center, providing insights into rural life of past centuries. A prominent hiking trail, known as the path to Veprinac, leads via hundreds of stone steps directly up from the coastal town of Opatija. This route was once the main connection for residents carrying their goods to the seaside market. Today, Veprinac is a favorite destination for hikers and photographers seeking tranquility away from the glamorous Riviera. Local inns serve dishes combining coastal and hinterland influences, such as chestnut specialties and game dishes. The air up here is noticeably fresher and features a welcome cooling during hot summer months. The town is also known for the Veprinački zakon (Veprinac Law) from 1507, an important historical legal document of the region.
