Omišalj is one of the oldest towns on the island of Krk, strategically perched on an 85-meter-high cliff that dominates the northern part of the Kvarner Gulf. Its history stretches back to prehistoric times, but it flourished under the Romans, who built the city of Fulfinum in the nearby Sepen Bay. During the Middle Ages, it became a major stronghold for the Frankopan counts and a center for Glagolitic literacy. The town's historic core has preserved its medieval atmosphere, characterized by winding stone streets and the Romanesque Church of the Assumption, dating back to 1213. Today, Omišalj presents a unique contrast between its quiet Mediterranean heritage and its modern role as a major energy and transportation hub. It hosts the Rijeka International Airport and a strategically vital LNG terminal. Located at the very entrance to the island near the Krk Bridge, it serves as the gateway to the archipelago, blending thousands of years of history with modern industrial significance.
