Crikvenica transformed in the late 19th century from a small fishing village into one of the most sophisticated health resorts of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The historic Hotel Therapy (formerly Archduke Joseph) still bears witness to this glamorous era. The town benefits from a sheltered location that keeps out cold winds and guarantees particularly clean, iodine-rich air. Along the Riviera, which also includes the towns of Dramalj, Selce, and Jadranovo, run beautiful pebble beaches and hidden coves. For families, the 'Gradsko kupalište' city beach is handy, while hikers appreciate the 'Love Path' (Ljubavna cestica) in the hinterland, which leads through dense forests to medieval ruins. The aquarium in the city center showcases the rich biodiversity of the Adriatic and is a highlight on rainy days.
