Vela Draga (Croatia)

Weather…

Vela Draga is an impressive geomorphological natural monument on the northeastern edge of the Učka Nature Park in Istria. The canyon is renowned for its spectacular limestone towers and rock formations, some of which soar over 60 meters high into the sky. These formations were created by the erosive force of water over millions of years, as softer rocks were worn away, leaving behind the harder karst cores. The area was placed under protection as early as 1963 and later integrated into the Učka Nature Park network. An educational trail runs along the canyon, providing information about the formation of the karst landscape, local flora, and the region's history. Vela Draga is an internationally known climbing area with numerous routes of varying difficulty levels on the distinct rock needles. From the viewpoints on the upper rim, there is a wide view over the Učka massif and the surrounding Istrian landscape. The flora in the canyon is adapted to extreme karst conditions and includes rare endemic plant species.
