Pucón is the undisputed adventure capital of Chile's panoramic Lake District, beautifully situated on the eastern shore of Lake Villarrica. The town's skyline is utterly dominated by the snow-capped, smoking cone of the Villarrica Volcano, one of the most active volcanoes in South America. Despite its rapid growth into a major tourist hub, Pucón retains an alpine charm with its wooden architecture, cozy chalets, and a bustling dining scene that heavily features local Mapuche ingredients, artisanal chocolates, and craft beers. The outdoor activities available here are endless and world-class. In the summer, visitors can hike through the ancient Araucaria (monkey puzzle tree) forests of Huerquehue National Park, raft the white-water rapids of the Trancura River, or relax in one of the many natural geothermal hot springs, like Termas Geométricas, hidden in lush ravines. The ultimate bucket-list activity is the grueling, ice-axe-assisted ascent to the crater rim of Villarrica Volcano to peer at its bubbling lava lake. In winter, the volcano's slopes transform into a boutique ski and snowboard resort. Pucón is easily accessible by overnight bus from Santiago or via a short flight to the nearby city of Temuco, followed by a 90-minute drive. Summer (December to March) is peak season, bringing warm lake waters but also massive crowds and traffic. For a quieter experience with memorable autumnal foliage, April is highly recommended, while July and August cater to winter sports enthusiasts.
