Cochamó

Cochamó sits precisely at the geographical point where the Reloncaví Estuary meets the towering peaks of the Andes, but its true international fame lies further inland. The Cochamó Valley, accessible strictly by foot or horseback, has become a global mecca for big-wall rock climbers and multi-day trekkers. Towering granite domes, such as Cerro Trinidad and Cerro Arcoíris, rise abruptly from the dense Valdivian rainforest, frequently drawing valid comparisons to the Yosemite National Park in California. The challenging hike into the upper valley follows historical gaucho trading trails through deep mud, river crossings, and ancient alerce tree groves, eventually leading to the La Junta base camp area. Down in the coastal village itself, less adventurous visitors can explore the historic wooden church built in traditional Chiloé style and enjoy local coastal cuisine, including fresh mussels, salmon, and wild garlic preparations. The village is reached via a highly scenic drive from Puerto Varas along the estuary's winding edge.
