Hornopirén National Park (Chile)

Weather…

Hornopirén National Park is located in the Palena Province of the Los Lagos Region and is part of the temperate rainforest biosphere reserve of the southern Andes. Established in 1988, the park spans approximately 48,232 hectares, characterized by rugged mountainous landscapes, deep valleys, and pristine forests. A central feature of the park is the majestic Hornopirén Volcano, which gives the area its name, alongside the Yates Volcano. The vegetation primarily consists of evergreen forests where the endangered Alerce (Fitzroya cupressoides) grows, a tree species that can live for several thousand years. The local wildlife includes rare species such as the puma, the monito del monte, and the pudu, the world's smallest deer. Accessible via the town of Hornopirén, which serves as a gateway to the Carretera Austral, the park remains relatively untamed. Due to its challenging terrain and high annual rainfall, it is less frequented by tourists, making it a first-rate retreat for hikers seeking a true wilderness experience.

Hornopirén National Park is best accessed from December to March when hiking trails are snow-free. Summer provides mild temperatures and less rainfall, well-suited for wildlife viewing.
🌅
Best time of day
Morning hours see birds most active, and pumas occasionally roam through the forests. Dusk is a good time to spot foxes or small mammals along forest edges.
📜
Etiquette
Do not feed animals and keep a respectful distance, especially from pumas and foxes. Bringing pets into the national park is not allowed to protect the native fauna.
🎒
What to bring
Waterproof hiking boots and a rain jacket are essential due to high rainfall in this rainforest. Binoculars with good light-gathering ability help spot birds in the dense canopy.

🦌
What to expect
