Manengouba Forest (Cameroon)

Weather…

The Manengouba forest covers the flanks of the Manengouba Mountains, an extinct volcanic complex in western Cameroon. The area is famous for its twin crater lakes, the Male and Female lakes, surrounded by dense montane forests and highland grasslands. The region is characterized by an exceptional diversity of amphibians, including many endemic frog species found nowhere else in the world. The vegetation is shaped by constant mist and high humidity, resulting in a high density of epiphytes and rare ferns. The forests play a crucial role as a watershed for the surrounding valleys, supplying numerous communities with fresh water. The local population, especially the Bakossi people, shares a deep cultural connection with the mountains, utilizing the forests for traditional medicine and spiritual ceremonies. In recent decades, however, deforestation for grazing land has led to habitat fragmentation, endangering specialized species.
