Wouri Bridge (Cameroon)

Weather…

The Wouri Bridge in Douala is the vital transport artery connecting the two halves of Cameroon's economic metropolis. Spanning the Wouri River, it links the industrial district of Bonabéri with the city center (Akwa and Deido). The original bridge was constructed between 1951 and 1954 during the French colonial period and was for a long time the only fixed crossing over the river. Due to enormous traffic volume and economic growth, a second, modern bridge was built directly alongside it and opened in 2017. The project involved not only the construction of the new structure but also the modernization of access roads and railway tracks. The bridges are of critical importance to the Port of Douala, enabling the transport of goods to northern Cameroon as well as to the landlocked countries of Chad and the Central African Republic. For the residents of Douala, the Wouri Bridge is a daily companion and a symbol of their city's industrial power and logistical significance.
