Kekem is an important market town in Haut-Nkam Department of the West Region and sits at about 800 metres elevation on the main road between Bafang and Nkongsamba. Its roughly 40 000 inhabitants belong mostly to the Kekem-Bandja Bamiléké subgroup, known for a strong diaspora and traditional chieftaincy culture. The economy rests on coffee, cocoa, bananas, avocados, honey and a thriving small-scale industry. Kekem sits on the key route between the fertile Bamiléké highlands and the Littoral Region, making it a central food transshipment point. Highlights include the Bandja chieftaincy with its artistically carved posts and drums, the nearby Mami Wata waterfalls and the annual Bandja initiation festivals with traditional dances. The mild upland climate with a marked rainy season from March to October allows two harvests a year and year-round fertile plantations.
