Nyarugenge is the historical, commercial, and financial heart of Kigali, the capital of Rwanda. It is the oldest part of the city and is home to the central business district (CBD). The headquarters of most of the country's banks, insurance companies, and large corporations are located here. The Nyarugenge Market, one of the largest and busiest markets in the city, is a maze of stalls selling everything from fresh food to clothing and electronics. The district is also the seat of the Kigali city administration. In recent years, Nyarugenge has undergone massive modernization, with the construction of high-rise buildings and the development of the car-free zone, which is popular for walking and leisure activities. Despite modernization, Nyarugenge has retained its bustling and dynamic character.
