White Fortress (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Weather…

The White Fortress (Bijela tabija) is a prominent historical fortification that sits majestically on a rocky outcropping on the eastern edges of Sarajevo. It formed the center of the Vratnik defensive walls, a system that protected the city from invaders. Archaeological findings suggest that the original foundations date back to the Middle Ages, during the time of the Bosnian Kingdom. However, it acquired its current massive, fortress-like appearance, with thick stone walls and characteristic embrasures, around the year 1550 under Ottoman rule. The name derives from the brilliant white limestone that was used for its construction. During the Austro-Hungarian era, the complex was modernized once again and equipped with additional barracks. Today, the White Fortress is a ruin, but it is protected as a national monument and attracts numerous visitors because it undoubtedly gives the most panoramic panoramic view of Sarajevo's Old Town, the narrow Miljacka valley, and the surrounding mountains.
