Yellow Fortress (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Weather…

The Yellow Fortress (Žuta tabija), located at the entrance to the old Vratnik neighborhood, is one of Sarajevo's most famous landmarks. This robust stone fortification was built between 1727 and 1739 under Ottoman rule, shortly after Prince Eugene of Savoy launched a devastating attack on the city in 1697. As part of a massive defensive line that surrounded the entire Old Town, it originally served as a cannon emplacement to repel potential invaders. The bastion owes its memorable name to the characteristic yellowish color of the local stone from which it was constructed. With its irregular octagonal floor plan and thick walls, it was an almost impregnable bulwark. Today, the Yellow Fortress has lost its military significance but is deeply rooted in Sarajevo's cultural life. It is particularly famous for the traditional cannon shot that marks the end of the fasting day (Iftar) every evening during the holy month of Ramadan. Furthermore, it is a popular viewpoint offering spectacular sunsets over the entire city.
