Jezero is a municipality in the western part of the Republika Srpska in Bosnia and Herzegovina, situated at the confluence of the Pliva and Jošavka rivers. The settlement gained global fame in 2018 when NASA announced that a crater on Mars would be named after the village. The Jezero Crater on Mars was the landing site for the Perseverance rover in 2021, chosen because its ancient river delta features mirror the geographic characteristics of this Bosnian region. Historically, the town has been closely linked to the nearby city of Jajce, serving as a strategic point within the Pliva valley for centuries. The surrounding landscape is defined by pristine nature, mountains, and the clear waters of the Pliva Lake, making it a growing destination for eco-tourism. Today, local leadership actively leverages its astronomical namesake to foster scientific interest and promote international tourism in the area.
