Jajce Fortress (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Weather…

The Jajce Fortress is an outstanding medieval defensive structure that towers high above the spectacular confluence of the Pliva and Vrbas rivers. The stronghold was founded in the late 14th century by Hrvoje Vukčić Hrvatinić and rapidly developed into one of the most vital centers of power in the region. Under King Stjepan Tomašević, Jajce became the final capital of the independent Bosnian Kingdom. The fortress walls enclose the historic town center, which was protected by a sophisticated system of gates. Particularly noteworthy are the catacombs carved directly into the bedrock, designed as an underground church and crypt for the Hrvatinić noble family, as well as the robust Bear Tower. Jajce stubbornly resisted Ottoman expansion, withstanding an initial siege in 1463 before finally falling in 1527. Today, visitors can explore the massive defensive walls, the ruins of the royal palace, and the portal adorned with the crest of the Kotromanić dynasty, all while enjoying wide-open views of the famous Pliva waterfall.
