Foča Old Town (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Weather…

The Foča Old Town (Stari grad Foča) is one of the oldest and historically most significant towns in the Podrinje region of eastern Bosnia. Strategically located at the confluence of the Drina and Ćehotina rivers, it has been a major trade center since the Middle Ages on the route connecting Dubrovnik with the Balkan interior. During the Bosnian royal period, Foča was known as 'Hotča' and was a thriving hub for crafts and commerce. The Ottoman conquest in the 15th century brought a cultural golden age, seeing the construction of magnificent mosques, such as the famous Aladža Mosque, and stone bridges. The architecture of the old town is characterized by narrow alleys, cobbled squares, and traditional houses made of stone and wood. Throughout the 20th century, the town suffered extensive destruction, particularly during the Bosnian War in the 1990s. In recent years, key monuments have been reconstructed to restore the town's cultural heritage. Today, Foča stands as both a historical monument and a gateway to the natural wonders of the nearby Sutjeska National Park.
