Ferhadija Mosque (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Weather…

The Ferhadija Mosque (Ferhad Pasha Mosque) in Banja Luka is one of the most remarkable testaments to Ottoman Islamic architecture in northwestern Bosnia. It was built in 1579 at the behest of Ferhad Pasha Sokolović, the first Beylerbey (governor) of the Bosnia Eyalet. The structure was designed by an unknown architect who was heavily influenced by the school of the great Mimar Sinan, evident in the harmonious proportions and classic arrangement of the main dome and secondary vaults. Alongside the magnificent mosque and its soaring minaret, the complex originally included a madrasa, a fountain, and three tomb mausoleums (türbes). During the Bosnian War in 1993, the Ferhadija was completely leveled by explosives, a tragedy that struck at the cultural identity of the region. In an unprecedented restoration effort, original stones were salvaged from rubble dumps to meticulously rebuild the mosque to its original specifications, culminating in its triumphant reopening in May 2016.
