Dubovac Old Town

The Old Town of Dubovac, often referred to as Dub or Dubovac near Višegrad, is a medieval fortification complex in eastern Bosnia. Situated on a strategic height overlooking the Drina river valley, it served as a vital checkpoint for trade routes connecting Serbia with the Bosnian interior. The fortress was likely constructed in the 14th century and was part of the regional defense system under the rule of local feudal lords, such as the Pavlović family. Its architecture is characterized by massive stone walls and the clever use of natural terrain for defense. In the 15th century, the site fell under Ottoman rule and gradually lost its military significance, though it remained an important symbol of medieval power structures in the region. Today, the ruins of Dubovac stand as a significant archaeological site, offering extensive views of the surrounding mountainous landscape and the Drina river.
