Samdrup Jongkhar Trade Hub (Bhutan)

Weather…

Samdrup Jongkhar is historically the most important gateway to eastern Bhutan. Before the construction of the national highway connecting the east to the west, this border town was the primary channel for trade and travel into the region. It borders the Indian state of Assam directly and was a bustling center for the exchange of agricultural products, textiles, and other goods. Today, it remains a vital trade hub, especially for the six eastern districts of Bhutan. The town serves as the main exit point for exporting goods like oranges, ginger, and cardamom from the region and for importing essential commodities. The government is working to upgrade the infrastructure in and around Samdrup Jongkhar to revive its role as a strategic commercial hub and to foster economic development in the country's east.
