Trashi Yangtse is the administrative capital of the Trashi Yangtse District in northeastern Bhutan, known for its rich cultural heritage and traditional arts. The town is famous for the Chorten Kora, a large white stupa built in 1740 modeled after the Boudhanath stupa in Nepal, which hosts two major annual festivals. Historically, Trashi Yangtse was an important center for trade and administration on the route to Tibet. Geographically, it is located in a deep valley at an elevation of 1,800 meters, surrounded by the Bumdeling Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary is a critical wintering ground for the endangered black-necked cranes, highlighting the area's ecological importance. The town is also a renowned center for traditional Bhutanese crafts, particularly wood turning (dapa) and lacquer work. Modern Trashi Yangtse houses government offices, a hospital, and the School of Traditional Arts (Zorig Chusum), which preserves the country's artistic traditions.
