Chorten Kora (Bhutan)

Weather…

Chorten Kora is a magnificent white stupa located near the Kulong Chu river in the Trashiyangtse district of eastern Bhutan. Completed in 1740 by Lama Ngawang Loday, the structure was purposefully modeled after the famous Bodhnath Stupa in Nepal. The primary reason for its construction was to subdue a local demon that had been terrorizing the inhabitants of the valley for generations. A poignant local legend tells of a princess from Arunachal Pradesh, India, who voluntarily allowed herself to be entombed alive within the chorten to bring peace and spiritual merit to the area. This sacrifice is honored annually during two significant festivals, Dakpa Kora and Drukpa Kora, which draw thousands of pilgrims from across Bhutan and neighboring Indian states. During these festivals, devotees perform ritual circumambulations around the stupa, accompanied by prayers and traditional ceremonies. The serene location by the riverside, combined with the white-washed walls and golden spires of the chorten, creates a deeply spiritual atmosphere. Trashiyangtse itself is a center for traditional arts, further enriching the cultural experience of those visiting this remote yet vital religious landmark.
